RM 63-01

Automatic Winding Dizzy Hands
Introduction

AN ARTISTIC CREATION EMBODIED AS A MECHANICAL TIMEKEEPER

At first quick glance, no clue betrays the unusual horological creation inside this timepiece, except perhaps the visual layout of the hours. In each detail, part and mechanical solution, one can see that this is pure Richard Mille in every sense.
When the pusher in the centre of the crown is depressed once, however, a slow-motion ballet begins: the sapphire glass dial begins to slowly rotate anti-clockwise as the hour hand moves clockwise, both at different speeds.

BASEPLATE AND BRIDGES MADE OF GRADE 5 TITANIUM

Microblasted grade 5 titanium with electro plasma treatment lends great rigidity to the whole assembly, as well as the precise surface flatness essential for perfect functioning of the gear train.

The skeletonised baseplate and bridges were subjected to intensive and complete validation tests to optimise their resistance capacities.

DIZZY HANDS COMPLICATION

The dizzy-hands mechanism is a unique horological art complication.

The hour numerals are on an antireflective disc of sapphire crystal. Pressing the crown causes this disc to begin a slow, anti-clockwise ballet of rotation. At the same time, the hour hand continues in a clockwise direction, but at a different speed. The result is that time is momentarily suspended for private moments of personal pleasure, shared or alone. Pressing the crown again brings an end to this dance of relativity and restores the sapphire disc and hand to their normal positions: time as we know it is restored.

Inspired by the chronograph, the column-wheel positioned at 1 o’clock actuates the rotation mechanism of the sapphire hour disc and hour hand. The hammer, positioned at 3 o’clock, triggers the return of the RM 63-01 to its initial state, displaying the exact time.

FREE-SPRUNG BALANCE WITH VARIABLE INERTIA

This type of balance wheel represents the ultimate in innovation.

It guarantees greater reliability when subjected to shocks and during movement assembly or disassembly, hence better chronometric results over time. The regulator index is eliminated, and a more accurate and repeatable calibration is possible thanks to 4 small adjustable weights located directly on the balance.

MOVEMENT CHARACTERISITICS

Movement diameter: 31.00 mm
Thickness: 6.675 mm
Number of jewels: 35
Balance: CuBe, 4 arms, 4 setting screws, moment of inertia 7.5 mg•cm2, angle of lift 50°
Frequency: 28,800 vph (4 Hz)
Balance spring: AK3
Shock protection: INCABLOC 908.22.211.100 (transparent)
Escapement wheel jewels: Rubifix (transparent)

CASE

The movement is surrounded by a round design case with 18K red gold front and back bezels enclosing a central caseband of titanium. It takes an extensive series of stamping and machining operations, to say nothing of the several days of adjustments required to produce the three-part ergonomically curving case design developed by Richard Mille. Unlike the other round watches in the collection, the RM 63-01 Dizzy Hands was the very first to have a curved, round front bezel; a subtle mark of the artistry held within its sensual and unique exterior.

The case is assembled with 16 spline screws in grade 5 titanium and abrasion-resistant washers in steel 316L.

Finishing

Movement

• Microblasted anglage
• Microblasted milled section
• Microblasted sinks
• Electroplasma treatment for the baseplate and bridges

Steel parts

• Satin finished surfaces
• Anglage hand polished
• Hand polished sinks
• Burnished sections

Wheels

• Concave chamfering with a diamond tool
• Diamond polished angles
• Circular finished faces
• Rhodium-plating (before cutting the teeth)

Other features

FAST-ROTATING BARREL (5 hours per revolution instead of 7.5 hours)

This type of barrel provides the following advantages:

  • The phenomenon of periodic internal mainspring adhesion is significantly diminished, thereby increasing performance.
  • Provision of an excellent mainspring delta curve with an ideal power reserve/performance and regularity ratio.

GEAR-TEETH PROFILE

The entire going train of the watch, the primary transmitter of power to the movement, utilises a special profile for the teeth of the wheels. The wheels use a 20˚ pressure angle. This system equalises any discrepancies that might arise between the centres of each wheel, for instance during thermal changes and normal use, and promotes an excellent transmission of torque to the balance wheel, thus supporting superior chronometric results.

SPLINE SCREWS IN GRADE 5 TITANIUM FOR THE BRIDGES AND CASE

This permits better control of the torque applied to screws during assembly. These screws are therefore unaffected by physical manipulation during assembly or disassembly and age well.
