RM 58-01

Manual Winding Tourbillon Worldtimer Jean Todt
Introduction

DEVELOPPED FOR EXTREME TRAVELLERS

As part of his worldwide campaign to promote cars and road safety, Jean Todt, President of the FIA (Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile), has travelled to over 130 different countries since his election in 2009. His adventure inspired the concept behind this model: the ultimate traveller’s watch.

Richard Mille wanted to offer extreme travellers like Jean Todt an easy and useful method for keeping track of travel through time zones with a special timepiece that manages time zones with unique simplicity and ease.
Wherever you may be, the watch provides a direct display of the exact local time in major cities all over the world, making it simple to manage your universal diary.

BASEPLATE AND BRIDGES IN GRADE 5 TITANIUM

Measuring 34mm in diameter, the calibre RM58-01 is supported on a baseplate of grade 5 titanium, a material also utilised for the bridges.

Manufacturing these components in grade 5 titanium with a black PVD coating confers great rigidity on the whole assembly, as well as the precise surface flatness essential for perfect functioning of the gear train.

The skeletonised baseplate and bridges were subjected to intensive and complete validation tests to optimize their resistance capacities.

MULTIPLE-TIMEZONE ADJUSTMENT MECHANISM

Behind its apparent simplicity hides a technical mechanism of immense complexity.
In contrast to other time zone watches, the RM 58-01 does not involve a pusher to change from one time zone to another. The time is set by simply rotating the bezel anticlockwise, making adjustment a much quicker operation. The rotating bezel incorporates a dedicated wheel connected to the movement that acts directly on the hour wheel. Turning the bezel anticlockwise ensures quicker, more accurate time setting. The lower disc, divided into 24 hours, shows the time in other cities and indicates whether it is day (white) or night (black).

Richard Mille wanted a device that would be very simple for the user; nonetheless, this innovation is the outcome of many hours of work by Richard Mille’s movement and case engineers, who managed the feat of linking the bezel and movement with a special gear train for perfect interaction, while ensuring that the whole timepiece remains water-resistant.

POWER-RESERVE INDICATOR

Located on a scale at 2 o’clock, the power-reserve indicator shows the number of hours of energy left in the mainspring before the watch must be wound again.

FREE-SPRUNG BALANCE WITH VARIABLE INERTIA

The free-sprung balance offers better reliability in the event of shocks, movement assembly and disassembly, and also guarantees better chronometric results over an extended period of time.

WINDING-BARREL TEETH AND THIRD-WHEEL PINION WITH CENTRAL INVOLUTE PROFILE

The central involute profile of the winding-barrel teeth and pinion provides an optimal pressure angle of 20°. This promotes effective rotary motion and compensates for possible variations in the engagement of the going train thus ensuring excellent torque transmission with a distinct improvement in performance.

SPLINE SCREWS IN GRADE 5 TITANIUM FOR THE BRIDGES AND CASE

This permits better control of the torque applied to screws during assembly. These screws are therefore unaffected by physical manipulation during assembly or disassembly and age well.

CASE

The design and execution of the watch demonstrate a holistic approach to conception of the movement, case and dial. As a result, everything has been constructed according to extremely rigorous specifications, in the manner of the analytical engineering methods used in the design of Formula 1 racing cars, where the chassis and the engine are developed in complete harmony.

The fixed bezel and the caseback are made from 5N 18K red gold, both polished and satin-brushed. The caseband is crafted of grade 5 titanium with vertical satin brushing, while the rotating bezel is in microblasted and polished titanium.

The lugs in 5N 18K red gold have vertical and horizontal satin brushing as well as polished bevels. The crown protector is made of satin-brushed grade 5 titanium, which is combined with 5N 18K microblasted red gold.

The case is assembled with 22 spline screws in grade 5 titanium and is water-resistant to 30 metres, ensured by two Nitrile O-ring seals.

Other features

IMPROVED TIME-SETTING SYSTEM

By replacing engaging friction by rolling friction, the time-setting function is smoother.

FAST-ROTATING BARREL (6 hours per revolution instead of 7.5 hours)

This type of barrel provides the following advantages:

  • The phenomenon of periodic internal mainspring adhesion is significantly diminished, thereby increasing performance.
  • Provision of an excellent mainspring delta curve with an ideal power reserve/performance and regularity ratio.

BARREL PAWL WITH PROGRESSIVE RECOIL

This device permits a profitable winding gain (circa 20%), especially during the start of winding. It is also helpful in evenly distributing the mainspring’s internal tension.
